Looking for an off the beaten path joint to kick back and enjoy an exceptional Caribbean view in Akumal? La Buena Vida, a super cool Mexican tree house bar, fits the bill to a T.
It’s located in a residential/vacation home area, close to Akumal Bay and Halfmoon Bay. Truly a great place to chill out after a morning of swimming with turtles. Or, y’know, swimming without them…

We walked here from Akuma Bay in about 30 minutes flat. The first part of the route was along the shore, and the remainder was on a cobblestone road with fellow vacationers whipping past us in souped-up golf carts.
30 minutes is a pretty modest walk. But May in Akumal is hot hot HOT. We sure could have used a ride from a golf cart.
Once up the ladder in your very own tree house, the staff will serve you using a pulley bucket. How cool is that?
If you happen to be afraid of heights, it’s no problem. Plop yourself down on a swinging seat at the bar. Or pull up a chair to one of the long wooden tables right on the beach. You can sit with your feet in the sand and the tropical view laid out before you.
But if you can work up the courage to get yourself up the ladder after a few cervazas, that’s definitely what I would recommend.
I mean honestly, how many times in your adult life do you get the opportunity to hang out in a tree house? For us, basically never.
Any bar along the beach in Akumal is going to have a stunning view. That’s how it goes in paradise. But this one offers something unique to those who come here. And for that reason, I’m telling you to add this stop to your itinerary.
The name, La Buena Vida, translates to mean “the good life”. An accurate description of a day well spent sipping on margaritas in a tree house bar, if you ask me.
So what are you waiting for? Get yourself to La Buena Vida! (please).
